Why? You've probably got at least 20 years, right? That's more
time than Charlie Parker (sax reference) played... :-)

Ditto. May I be the first to recommend the Aebersold
play-alongs? ( www.jajazz.com , IIRC) They are not strictly
for jazz players, as he has play-alongs for basic scale
practice, etc. I find them great moral support.

I think you should buy whatever you would like that you can
afford and are willing to spend the money on. A better
instrument should be *easier* to play, IMHO. This list is a
good source of recommendations for what you should consider....

Please don't be modest about your "likely ultimate standard of
playing." I took up clarinet after a 15-year hiatus, sax and
flute for the first time, at age 36, and I am *good*. So can
you be!
