We had open house at our university today. I had the wonderful
opportunity to meet and listen to some very fine clarinetists - all
excellent players!

5 of the six were playing on Buffet R-13's. One of the six had a Leblanc
Opus - almost brand new. She let me try it and, while it was smooth and
quite nice, played no better than my Buffet Prestige. Additionally, here
were the problems:

Altissimo: sharp E, VERY sharp high G. Flat F and F# (same as some
Buffet R-13's).

Throat - perfectly in tune, but strange tone - thin and poor reaction to
any combination of coloring fingerings. This was them most dissapointing
area of the instrument.

Low register - well in tune, but less than satisfactory projection on
lowest octave compared to other instruments - may need adjustments, but
all pads were sealing and looked like they were the correct height.

I found the instrument to be a very nice, smooth playing horn. However,
it still had it's problems - as do all - and I would not have played a
recital on it without having Brannen work on it.
