"Woodshedding" is a term that dates from the days when most homes had a small
building out back, used for the storage of firewood for the furnace, fireplace
and/or kitchen stove. When families got sick and tired of hearing a family
member practice the same thing over and over and over and over, the musician
would be banished to the woodshed, to continue his/her practicing out there --
out of earshot. (Interesting corollary -- you never hear pianists use the
term unless they also play another instrument -- you can't take the piano out
to the woodshed.)
