P: Micro-practice. Taking the piece apart (if that's what you're doing
in the woodshed ;-), down to fragments and practicing until it's perfect,
then putting it all back together. (It's a slang term which probably
has an interesting background if we could ever find it out)

P: I was referring to the comment about getting a marching band thread
going... not about your band director's policy. I'm sure he/she was
serious.

P: I generally start at the end, and have students memorize that ( a few
measures) then add the measures before, etc. There have been discussions
on the list about rehearsal methods for memorizing, you may want to check
the archives.
For me, the hardest part is making sure my lip is in shape. The only way
that comes is to play, play, play. Fingerings, rhythms etc. will soon
amount to "muscle memory". After 20+ years of not playing, I was able to
*play* a von Weber Concertino the first time I picked up the clarinet
again - a few phrases at a time only - because the fingers remembered
the placements and subconscious the rhythms. The rest was a mess -
intonation, breath control, consistency etc.
You CAN do it. Your interest and drive in being part of this
organization will come through and will help you do whatever's needed to
get a permanent spot on the field. Although luck has nothing to do with
it - I'll wish you the best of luck, anyway!
