Heifetz and his violins

When Heifetz came to the USA at age 17, he created a sensation.
Everyone said that they had never heard anything like this.
Supreme. Perfection itself. No one could be better.

So what violin was he playing? a Carlo Tononi.

After his debut, an ardent admirer who heard him , approached him and
told him that he has a STRAD that he would lend to him for as long as
he wished.

For two years he played that instrument and when means allowed it,
he bought the instrument from this admirer, no name mentioned.

But Heifetz felt that he would like to have a Guarnerius, which were
hard to come by since they were made in smaller numbers.
Eventually he found one and that was his instrument during his career.
He also had other STRADS

Imagine if Heifetz would have played a clarinet--look at the choices he
would have had now!
