I used to play sax and took up Clarinet because a decent clarinet was less
expensive at the time than a decent sax. I bought a Buffet E-11. But I
treated my clarinet like a sax--swabbing it and leaving it assembled. It
developed two irreparable cracks in the upper joint and I ended up buying a
new clarinet and selling the old one for parts.

>From my reading on Sneezy, my understanding is that some clarinets will
probably never crack, others may no matter what you do, still others my need
to be treated gingerly, and that no mortal knows ahead of time which are
which. So, basically, why take chances exposing it to too much expansion-
inducing moisture by letting it collect between the joints?? Heck, at this
point I often take my new E11 apart and wipe it clean IN THE MIDDLE of a
practice session! But then I'm probably being paranoid. :-)

Truly,
Don
