In high school I had a Buffet E-11, my 1st wooden clarinet.
At first, I would leave it assembled (i did swab it out though) so that I
could practice whenever...
What I did notice was in the middle tenon, the water and cork grease formed
this goopy stuff after a while. The wood never looked the same after that.
I never bothered to wipe out the tenons... I think it may have been the
wood softening up??

With my R13's, I wipe the tenons every single time and I pack it up in the
case, The wood still looks 100% great. I'm glad I got to learn from my
E11 (sold it years ago).

Unfortunately, the alto clarinet i'm using from WSU actually shows what
could happen in the long-run when water is left in a wood horn: the wood
just above the register key vent-hole is deteriorating. I'm assuming this
is from water left there over a long period of time (where the metal neck
meets the wood), it's an old horn.
