Just as an addendum to my last post I will share this one observation for
whatever it may be deemed worth:
I know there are always benefits and losses to any decision that is made my
a designer. The last clarinets I saw of Louis' were of a single piece;
that is, upper and lower joint were together in the same piece of wood.
I know there are benefits from this I won't go into, but I do have a single
concern; that of tuning.
As the clarinet warms up the pitch relationship of the right and left hands
change; the whole clarinet gets warmer, but, since the right hand warms up
more slowly, after one plays a while the right hand pitches, especially
clarion "D" and "C" , but "B" as well creep up further in pitch.
Being able to pull at the middle joint, to me, is a great blessing, and
without it I believe we lose a method of tuning that , to me , at least,
has been a life saver in certain instances, especially when I had to play
in a very warm room.
I am sure Louis has thought a lot about this and I would like to hear
anything he would care to share.
I wonder if Louis is now producing a clarinet with separate upper and lower
joints? We don't keep in touch, so I'm afraid I'm really behind the times
about all of this.
