Just as various and sundry problems with evenness, resistance, and
intonation can be pointed out on certain brands of clarinet. I never
intended to denigrate Selmer saxophones (I love my Mark VI alto, and would
trade my YTS-52 for an S-80 tenor in a heartbeat!) But in terms of
intonation, I have never played a sax that was EASIER to play in tune than
that YAS-875. If I had thought it was ENOUGH easier to justify the
expense, I would have sold my Selmer to buy the Yamaha. Perhaps tradeoffs
in response, etc., had to be made to achieve the intonation. Such are the
compromises designers make. I'm sure the placement of the register tube on
the R-13 has certain ADVANTAGES as well as the disadvantages that have been
noted, or the design would have been changed long ago. As long as people
can make their selections KNOWING what the advantages and disadvantages are
and whether other options are available, all is right with the world.

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is too loud.
