My original question:

I wanted to know what can happen directly to the instrument by being left on the
stand. The thing with dogs, or for that matter cats, little siblings, cleaning
ladies (if you're rich enough) is obvious. So obvious to me that I didn't
mention it in my original question.

I often *advise* my pupils to leave their instruments out and encourage them to
buy a clarinet stand for this purpous. The reason is this: The absolutely No. 1
PROBLEM with the vast majority of my (and other's surely) pupils is that they do
not practise enough! One small help is to leave the instrument built up so you
only have to grab it, wet and mount the reed and start. My reasoning is that the
hardest part of practising for most people is opening the case.

It is my intention to continue to advise my pupils to do this, assuming they
have no of the above mentioned hindrinces (oh dear, don't have my spelling
checker for English on).
If anyone knows of a good reason not to do this, I would be happy (or rather sad
for the practising reason) to hear of it.
