The original meaning is Laughing Out Loud (Lots Of Laughs works but is
not the original meaning). See the jargon file (the one, true, and only
jargon file, from the New Hacker's Dictionary, where LOL was included
from Guy Steele's JARGON.TXT file from 1983):
