Line's story reminds me of when I was in a youth orchestra in Berlin,
playing the Britten War Requiem. Piece after piece of glorious,
effortlessly sublime music. We played it in East and West Berlin and
Vienna in 1987, before the Wall came down. In West Berlin, the same thing
happened after the fantastic fade-out of the last sonority; one person
just had to be the one to start the clapping. But in the East, I think it
was close to a minute of complete and utter silence, just us on stage and
the audience in the seats lost in contemplation...
