That seems unlikely. My rings always get loose in the dry winter
conditions as the wood shrinks. Assuming that your instrument would do the
same thing, this would REDUCE the pressure of the ring against the wood. I
would be more inclined to believe that the ring was too LOOSE to start
with, and that the wood was insufficiently supported by the ring to help
prevent cracking. More likely, of course, is that it was going to crack
anyway, and it is good that it happened while the instrument was still
under warrantee.
