Subj: [kl] the maestro's revenge!

A little while ago, we were discussing how some current audiences couldn't
differentiate between a glorious, suberbe performance and an ok. but
nothing special one. They would immediately give standing ovations to
absolutely every performance without showing any discriminating taste.

Well, I just thought I'd share tonight's concert experience...

I went to hear the Detroit Symph. Orch. perform Brahms' German Requiem
(with the Choral Union of the University Musical Society(?) from U of M,
Kevin MacMillan - baritone, sop.?? (i forget her name right now)...
well,
at just about every single DSO concert I've ever attended, there's this one
yahoo who insists on being the 1st person to clap and yell "bravo,
BRAVO!!!" after each performance. I swear it's the same guy every time - I
now recognize his voice. (and i'm SO impressed with his vast knowledge of
the Italian language - hahaha!)
As we all know, the Requiem doesn't end with a huge, bombastic
"Ta-Dah!!!"-type ending; rather it is subdued and calm, in a reflective
mood that is of course fitting for a Requiem. Well, the last chord
sounded, floated into the hall, started to dissipate, the wonderful "hush"
at the end of a good performance was now imminent (the Maestro's arms were
still up, b.t.w.), when Mr Bravo decides he absolutely Must intrude and
burst everyone's little moment of sublime happiness with CLAP CLAP BRAVO
BRAVO - and a small bunch of other pathetic sheep follow him.
Now's the good part: Neeme Jarvi, his arms still up, the orchestra still
poised in playing position - turns his head around to the audience and
shakes it: "no, no, no" he says... then he turns back to the orchestra,
pauses, and finally lowers his baton, and the musicians lower their
instruments! HAHAHA!!! THEN the big applause broke out!!!

I thought: Orchestra:1, yahoo: 0.
BRAVO to Maestro Neeme Jarvi and the DSO !!!
