As many of you may know, my precious Buffet Prestige 1193-2 bass
clarinet developed a crack through its upper joint a few weeks ago. In
the confusion that followed (alerting the proper folks in regards to the
instrument's warranty, worrying about second semester auditions in a week,
and trying to procure a horn for an important gig in two weeks), I was
told that Brannenizing would have prevented the crack in the upper joint.
Basically, the crack extends down 9 cm from the top of the joint and from
the outer surface of the wood to the bore, passing through the automatic
register hole. The horn leaks so badly when played that you can hear and
feel air escaping from the crack. Having been told that there weren't any
replacement joints sitting around in the warehouse and that an order would
need to be made to Paris, I truly want to avoid this situation again.
It's going to be a while before I have a working instrument in my
hands. What precautions should I take to avoid cracking when I receive a
new joint? Would having the bass Brannenized be a good preventative
measure? Tell me what y'all think.
