I play double lip, and have for five years now (after 20-plus on single).
It certainly prevents any tendency toward biting, although certainly by now
i have some pretty serious strength in the upper lip (you might say i can
keep a stiff upper lip. Then again, you might not...). My teacher ( i
went back to lessons after twenty years) had me use double as a teaching
tool to correct some embouchure problems and i've never gone back. The
biggest difficulty is in stabilizing the instrument while playing--i keep
the bell on my knees most of the time, which takes care of that.

But as to what this will do to help your TMJ--i don't know. You still have
the same kinds of strain on the jaw, cheek muscles etc.--have you talked
with a dentist about whether this (the double embouchure) would help? It
seems wise to get perhaps more than one professional opinion as to how to
best approach it.
