Hi Jennifer!

I play double lip.

Now, I have absolutely no knowledge on TMJ, but I do have experience in
teaching students to switch from single lip to double lip embouchure. Feel
free to ask whatever you need concerning that.

My first advice is to do it very gradually. Your upper lip has no strength at
all right now, and will tire very quickly. Play for five minutes at a time,
starting with just five minutes a day. After a week or so, start increasing
the amount you play each day, but still don't do more than five minutes a
"session". Take long breaks in between.

Even as everything develops and your lip toughens up, still continue to
practice in five minute intervals. The best way to do it is five minutes on,
five minutes off. (Even better is two and two, but my brain can't handle that
at all.) After many years, I tend to do ten and ten. The important thing is
to have as much "off" time as "on" time.

Work closely with your doctor throughout this process. I would recommend also
finding an established double lip player to take lessons from, to make sure
you're using everything correctly and not fatiguing anything in there.

Keep us posted on how things are going.

Teri Herel.
