It is a rainy day in New York, the streets are now like glass coated
with cooking oil, and none of this is conducive to the spirit of
Christian, Jewish, or Ba'hai charity. Even though I probably should not
make light of this, the report about the songbirds reminds me this
morning of nothing so much of how people live in and what they sound
like in New York City during rush hour. Squawks, f-yous, subway
screeches, taxicab horns, rap non-music blaring from boomboxes, and
scowls that are all but audible. On a day like this I find it a
wonder--maybe even a miracle--that New York City has some of the finest
conservatories and performing groups in the country.
