Sometimes I will call the student part way into their lesson time just to
see what's going on (usually it's just cuz they forgot). I just say that I
was expecting them for a lesson at (whatever time their lesson was to start)
and I just wanted to make sure everything was okay.
In any case, I'll usually call them before the next lesson to make sure
there was no confusion about their lesson time.

=======================================================

I had a student who took up music as an adult. He was a tennis instructor,
so he was familiar with the situation of a private instructor relying on
the students to be consistent with attendance. He came to his first lesson,
then forgot to come to his second one. I rescheduled him that week, and he
paid me Double! I did not ask him to pay for the missed lesson, as an
honest mistake I can put up with. He insisted, saying that he charges his
Tennis students for no shows, and makeups too, so it was not a problem at
all. The killer was that this guy missed, and paid for more lessons then he
had. This happened 2 more times!! Finally he quit, I was glad.....

I always call the student's house 10 minutes after the lesson time starts.
As far as I'm concerned, they are at that point 15 minutes late, as I tell
all of my students to arrive 5 minutes early to set up. When they have to
pay for a missed lesson, it can be a good "memory jogger" for the next time.
