Like Brent Eresman, I, too, make my living in ways other than playing the
clarinet.
I used to belong to two community bands; one was outstanding; the other,
Mediocre--the capital "M" is on purpose ;-) So I agree with Brent about the
varying quality of community bands.
When I outgrew those venues and felt the need to advance at my own pace, I
formed my own woodwind ensemble. We are a duo (flute and clarinet) but
occasionally play with an oboist, as well. Initially, we played at no charge
for nursing homes, and we continue to do those kinds of gigs for free because
it is a way of giving back to the community. On the "paying" side of the
ledger, we have also played for private parties, including gourmet catered
ones, as well as at local restaurants, retail stores, schools, and banks.
My main advice is NOT to wait for musical opportunities to present themselves
to you. Create your own opportunities. Get together with like-minded
musicians, buy some music, rehearse, and print some business cards. As they
say: do what you love; the money will follow.
