>Ken - I remember Charlie Ponte very well. I remember buying oboe reeds
from him when I was doubling on clarinet, sax and oboe at the High School of
Performing Arts. A few years later I rented a baritone sax from him when I
went on the road and needed one for a short period. I also bought my first
instruments from Sam Ash in Booklyn. This was the original store. I was
always treated well by Sam's two sons who are now running the whole show. I
was shocked when I was treated badly at his two superstores here in South
Florida. I haven't been in New York in 25 years now, but I'm sure the
situation is the same as it now is here. I make all my major purchases now
by phone at Muncy Winds, The Woodwind and the Brasswind, J.L Smith and a few
others. I get the best possible prices, I can try anything(except of
course reeds) usually for two weeks. I only use the local store such as Sam
Ash for emergency purposes like when I run out of reeds. If they only knew
how much they are losing!
