David Bourque has already posted suggestions regarding playing contrabass -
I'm unclear from your post whether they intend for you to play Bb or Eb contra
(not everybody is careful about using the term "contralto" for the Eb). If
it's Eb, you might want to be prepared to transpose in case you have to play a
piece for which there is no written contrabass part. You will usually be
given a tuba part to play on Eb contra - just pretend you are in treble clef
and add 3 #s to the key signature (be careful of the accidentals). You should
get the hang of it pretty quickly. I second David's enthusiasm for trying
this part - being willing to play harmony instruments can get you into some
good ensembles! Good luck & have fun!
