Ho ho.

Lots of interesting information in this thread. I have to say, though,
that I'm surprised that Noah doesn't like playing the Stravinsky, and I
want to know more about that. Would you be willing to be more explicit,
Noah? I sort of feel I'd like to help you like it more.

I don't mean that you aren't entitled to your own opinion, by the
way. When I first encountered them in my teens I used to say that of
the Three Pieces that I didn't actually understand them, or know how to
play them, even though I did perform them.

But I've since come to think that the sort of freedom you have in
playing them is precisely the sort of freedom I most admire when I hear
it demonstrated by a performer -- the reason, incidentally, that I
quoted C.D.F.Schubart on C.P.E.Bach for a bit in my sig:

"...one is aware of witchcraft without noticing a single magical
gesture."

Stravinsky is so explicit about what you *should* do;-) and yet -- there
is so much possibility still remaining to a performer because of the
richness of imagination behind what Stravinsky wrote.

I now think that this and Syrinx are the two great modern masterpieces
for a solo wind instrument, with Abime des oiseaux not far behind.

Someone posted on this before, and it's in the archives, with actual
comments by Stravinsky, but I think there's more to say.

I could go into greater detail, but I'd like to have Noah's input first,
if he'll give it.

Tony
