Subject: Tonguing question for Mr. Blumberg

Mr. Blumberg -
If you can single tongue 16ths at quarter=220, please let me know how you do
it. To me, that sounds pretty incredible. Do you build it up like
bodybuilders do? If so, do I need steroids? :)
Seriously, how is it done?

Prayer, and Vitamins ;) No, really - I do it naturally. I could do it when
I was young too. Used to freak the hell out of older players. I remember in
8th grade a senior in H.S. at a Music Camp saying to me "man, you are going
to drive the Women wild someday with your tongue." I had no idea what he
was talking about.
Is it single tonguing?? By the definition of the word, maybe, but then
again, maybe not. One thing neat is that the upper octave is not an issue
like standard double tonguing is. I know of players (soloists in Military
Bands) who can double tongue like demons, but can not do it above C (2
leger lines). The side to side method has no range limits. I don't use it
for the Mendelspohr (sp ;) scherzo, as it is not needed. Hey, if the
conductor decides to play it at 120 instead of 90, then maybe, or Beethoven
4th at 175 - yes. I double, and triple tongue also, but if it gets beyond
that, then I do the other method - kind of a "high gear". The way to work
on it would be to swing your tongue from side to side in your mouth, and
practice speed that way. Probably the muscle would limber up, but possibly
I have an extra bit of muscle in my tongue. It does make the heck of a
special effect. Hey, maybe I could go on Letterman as a stupid human trick ;)
