Back in the late 70s, I saw an article in the Chicago Magazine that
featured an Larry Combs and Dale Clevenger who were guest
performers with a group called Ears at a club called Orphans. To shorten
a long story, I did get to study with Mr. Combs that summer and see the
group a couple of times at the club. Larry's jazz playing, on alto sax,
was much better than Clevenger's french horn, but I recall being very
impressed by the bass trumpet player in the group.
