Original licorice is soft, thin, tube of candy flavored with anise, and
is colored black (yes, I know about the red stuff - but it isn't
traditional licorice :). A slang word for the clarinet is "licorice
stick" since the clarinet traditionally is a black tube. "Licks" is a
slang for fast runs on an instrument, especially improvised. Of course,
"lick" could also mean using the tongue to "lick" the licorice. Thus,
the play on words, along with the alliteration.
