I also have an R-13 from 1963 (79,128) and it's an amazing horn. It was originally
purchased by Clark Brody. It is in semi-retirement being replaced by a #436,000.
I've been told that clarinets from that time, 79,xxx, are the tail end of what has
been thought of as the best Buffets, 78,xxx. Perhaps it's clarinet folklore. I
recently played a Buffet with the serial number 78. Overall, it was an OK
instrument but the altissimo register played effortlessly and clear. This clarient
had much more resistance than more recent clarinets.

If I remember correctly, Alan Blustein, a great freelance clarinetist in NYC played
a 78,xxx until about five or six years ago. So much about those who think you
should replace your clarinet every five years.
