i have performed in musicals in the past but not the "wizard of oz"....
however, i have some experience doubling on both alto sax and bass
clarinet (only about one and a half years and five months, respectively,
but every bit counts...) so i guess i can take the liberty to put a few
words in...
as far as bass clarinet goes.....well, you mention having a few leaky
pads, and you may think thats charming at first but the novelty of
doubling wears off eventually when you cant get some of the higher notes
out because of disrepair...so get the leaky stuff fixed
(and anything that might be broken for that matter) i have to share a
bass with an idiot who throws the thing together minutes before band
startsand causes all sorts of damage, and it is no picnic.
with the saxophone, i found that it isnt so tough at all once you've
been playing every day for months and months. it's been said before
that the fingerings are the easiest part, and thats the truth. there are
a lot of similarities in the fingerings actually, which im sure you
know....although it would be much easier to learn the fingerings if you
played flute, but since the fingerings arent the hard part i guess it
doesnt matter, does it? :) anyways, i occasionally find myself playing
alto sax fingerings on bass clarinet, but thats just stupididty. it
sounds kinda neat...
a final note on doubling either instrument...if you are going to be
switching back and forth as much as in a show, you just have to make
sure you spend enough practice time with the instruments so you have the
appropriate embouchure ready (or "armiture", if you will :D ), because
it can definitely get weird. good luck!

Dana
