Subj: [kl] Really Unusual Clarinet

A truly unusual clarinet just sold on eBay this morning for $355. I only
discovered it an hour before it sold or I would have pointed it out to the list
earlier. If you hurry, you can still (as of this writing) see a picture of it
at:

http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=52604894

In the picture, it looks like an Albert system alto clarinet but the body is
only 14 1/4" in length! The body is described as "yellow" and "very hard
material but not wood." I asked the seller to verify the measurements and she
graciously remeasured the instrument. She confirmed that the body was, indeed,
only 14 1/4" and indicated that the overall length (no mouthpiece) was 19" (I'm
not sure whether that is from the tip of the neck to the curve in the bell or
from the tip of the neck to the end of the bell, though.)

Adding length for the mouthpiece (and possibly the bell?) probably makes the
instrument too long to be an Eb soprao but it's far too short to be an Alto
clarinet or basset horn (also does not range to low C). It looks to me like C
or Bb is the most likely pitch.

Have any of you ever run across anything like this or do any of you have any
idea what it (and its origin) might be?

Best regards,
Jack Kissinger
