Tony Pay mentioned re the bass trumpet:

<<<Funnily enough, I've played one!>>>

I, too, have played bass trumpet, although not for the Berio. (I dabble a
tiny bit on trumpet, which would be evident if you were to hear me). You
don't have to go to Germany to buy a new one--they are produced by Bach here
in the U.S. as well.

Very basically, they're a smaller-bore (.485 v. .500) valve trombone wrapped
a little differently. There's a bit more resistance because of the
additional kinks in the tubing; most folks will use a little smaller
mouthpiece as well. The sound is a tad brighter, too because the bell flare
is tighter. For those of you whose programs need a bass trumpet and you
can't find one, though, a valve trombone is basically interchangeable if not
as aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
