Adding my two cents, American, to the intonation debate. I highly recommend
the practice of playing, unisons, fourths, fifths and octaves with a tuner
playing the beginning note in a drone like manner. One can always needle
check the pitch but this method has the advantage of strengthening the ear.
As I tell my students, one needs to learn to listen, after all your colleagues
don't have needles on their heads.
