Well, I don't think you could successfully wed a joyful text to the Dies Irae
- too readily associated with its original text, and the mood of the music
absolutely wouldn't fit. But this kind of thing is done with hymn tunes and
texts all the time - there are several hymn texts associated with "Hymn to
Joy," as a matter of fact. And what about "My Country 'Tis of Thee" vs. "God
Save the Queen?" That works because they're both solemn, patriotic texts.
Just to be obnoxious, though, did you know you can interchange the tunes and
texts for "Amazing Grace," "House of the Rising Sun," and the theme song to
"Gilligan's Island?" Try it!
