Subj: [kl] Richard Strauss' duet concertino

A long time ago I was playing Elektra at the Met (as a substitute) and
sitting next to me in the pit (as a guest, not as a player - he had
already retired) was the man to whom Strauss dedicated that composition.
It was Hugo Burghauser, who Strauss calls "The Faithful" in his
dedication. I had always thought that it was written for Wlach, the
clarinetist, but Burghauser told me that this was not the case.

He also told me that Strauss was a great conductor but a very bad
card player.

I was so interested in Burghauser as a person and the decency of his
humanity, that I wrote a short story about him that was published
only about 4 months ago. I didn't write the story then, only after
gathering a lot of facts about Burghauser and what a righteous man he
was.
