Apropos this sort of thing, I still treasure a remark Sigiswald Kuijken
made when we were playing Haydn Masses with him a few years ago.

Sigiswald said, "You know, a lot of composers writing sacred music
worried about whether their music was good enough for God. With Haydn,
you get the impression he just shrugged, smiled, and said, Oh, He'll
like it."
