It may not be what Beethoven wrote, but I'll betcha more people recognize
it as Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee (text by Henry van Dyke long after
Beethoven's death) than as Ode to Joy. I'm not sure how well it would go
with clarinet and bassoon (my son does a jazz trumpet arrangement of it,
though!). My choir has a 3 part piece that has a psalm text written to a
Beethoven canon. It's a fun piece and we love it, but it doesn't sound
particularly "sacred" until you put the words to it. I'll look up what
work it is when I go to church this a.m. and post it later. All of which
brings me to my suggestion. Take a look at sacred VOCAL duets for low
and medium voice, pick a liturgical one and transpose the treble. There
are tons of books out there at the larger music stores - Volkwein's and
Musik Innovations in the Pittsburgh, PA area for instance.
I transcribed a clarinet field warm-up from a women's barbershop quartet
vocal piece. The voicing is very appropriate for clarinet.

Happy Epiphany - for the liturgical - and Happy New Year, everyone!
