FWIW, I hardly ever get a *really* bad reed anymore. (Some, of
course, are better than others....)

I think it has to do with two factors:

1) I don't use any reeds sooner than a year after I receive
them.

and

2) I've been doing embrouchre (sp?) exercises for quite a while,
mostly consisting of pressing lips together firmly and holding,
followed with moving jaws as far apart as possible without
parting lips, big smiles (hold), followed by fish lips (like
goldfish kisses).

I've done the best I can to describe the exercises--I got them
in a Saxophone Journal some time back--if anyone want more
details, email me and I'll try to dig it up....
