OK, I'll confess, I'm one of those weirdoes that started out on clarinet and
added oboe to the arsenal about three years later. (I've also added English
horn, flute, piccolo, and alto and tenor sax, but that's a whole other story.)
I've never been sure whether I went out of my mind or came to my senses when I
took up the oboe, but it was a move I'll never regret. I went from being
buried halfway down the clarinet section to being the one and only oboe in my
junior high school band. Good clean fun! :-)

Before I started oboe, tonguing was quite a challenge for me. Playing oboe
helped that quite a bit; I'm not sure why. I've also found that several
aspects of adjusting double reeds can be carried over to adjusting single
reeds.

Yes, I deal with reeds - LOTS of them! Four oboes, an English horn, two
clarinets, an alto sax, and a tenor sax have their ways of consuming reeds by
the bucketful! Not to mention 12 oboe students that need reeds all the time!

So to you clarinet players who are up to the challenge - go ahead and take the
plunge. You'll be glad you did.
