When I need to play flat to be in tune, I ease off on the right side of the
reed but without increasing pressure on the left side. Depending on how flat I
need to be, you might even notice that I have twisted the whole instrument
very slightly to stay in tune. My flutist friend tells me that I am doing the
equivalent of "rolling" the flute to adjust intonation. I'm not sure if that's
an accurate analogy but it does seem to work for me.
