Mark, I still have that problem a little bit even though I have played for a
long time. What do I do? Well, I pull out and if it gets worse instead of
better I push in. It's even more difficult if I have had to assist a number
of other people tune up. My ear just seems to "give up." Oddly enough
though once the ensemble starts playing, my pitch just seems to settle right
in if I was anywhere close to start with. If it's just a couple of beats
off, the subconscious embouchure control just seems to kick in.
