I've always considered them more like beats, because that's the term I was
taught for them. When you play two notes that are only slightly out of
tone, the beats are really slow, but as you get farther out of tun ethey get
faster.

I could rhyme off a physics description of what's happening, but I'll bet
there's somone significantly more qualified than I who'll give an elaborate
description about the soundwaves and stuff, and besides, it's not that
important for tuning to understand *exactly* the physics behind it. :)
