Mike -

How you set up the microphones is entirely dependent upon:

What microphones you are using - Omni-Directional/HyperCardiod (sp!)
AKG's, Seinhauser, Crown, Neumann....all high end
or if you are using less expensive microphones.
If they are directional, set them as far back as possible
If they are the former, set them high and 4-6 feet away

Are you mixing several microphones? Is it a Mackie, phantom powered
board, or are you just going directly into a recording machine?

What is the room like? Live, dead, general? Large, small - wood,
curtains, windows?

Lots of questions - having mastered a few CD's with clarinetists (and
other instruments), these are important considerations before placement of
microphones can occur.
