Klarinet Archive - Posting 001072.txt from 1998/12

Without pointing any fingers, let me make a general comment, which I
know is valid in other fields and I presume is valid in discussions of the
art of clarinet playing:
When two respected practitioners of this art disagree, they are
probably both right - at the very least, they both have some element of "the
truth" in their comments. As I have read the various controversial posts
over the past year or so, my impression is that I can learn from both
parties, and probably learn more because of the discussion than I would from
either party alone.
The difference is akin to the difference between a performance and a
contest. In the former case, the goal is to produce the best music
possible. In the latter, it is to beat someone. I hope that this list can
be a verbal performance rather than a contest.
