Doug:

Checkout the following website for jazz books for clarinet:

http://www.jwpepper.com/Welcome.html

Under the title search, type in just the two words clarinet jazz then
press the search button. Also search for B Flat jazz.

I'm no expert on this, and will leave that to others on the list. It's
just that I've found a lot of jazz books for clarinet, and Bb
instruments in general, are carried by Pepper. There are several Benny
Goodman books, including one by him that appear.

I'm listing some of the books I know of, and have collected. Then,
let's see what others on the list have to say about this. Especially
regarding what would be a good book to start with.

Some of the books that are currently available include:
New Real Book B Flat (a set of 3 books; lots of songs)
The Essential Jazz Book (52 solos)
14 Jazz and Funke Etudes
Choice Jazz Standards (30 songs)
--> The Jazz Method for Clarinet (by John O'Neill)
--> Jazz Clarinet (by Bill Smith)
Progressive Jazz Studies for Bb Clarinet (easy & intermediate)
Arties Shaw's Jazz Technic (books one and two)
Mel Bay's Complete Jazz Clarinet Book
Benny Goodman for Bb Clarinet
--> Benny Goodman's Clarinet Method
Great Jazz Classics (29 songs)
Jazz Gems (15 songs)
The Definitive Jazz Collection (about 90 songs)
The Ultimate Jazz Fakebook Bb edition (625 songs)
The Real Jazz Book (500 songs)

--> these appear to be beginning or introductory books for jazz on the
clarinet

There are also numerous books with cassettes and CDs that I have not
collected yet. Hopefully your search of Pepper's database will come up
with some of them for you, like it did for me.

Checkout The Clarinet In Jazz, Since 1945 web site while you're at it:

http://www.dragonfire.net/~msnyder/clarinet/clar1945.htm

Good luck with this. And, I hope others on the list can provide more
specific feedback than the general information I've provided here. I've
only been playing the clarinet since June and want to learn jazz on it
but I would be getting too far ahead of myself if I was to say which of
the above books is a real good one to start with. Hopefully, other
klarinet listers will help you with that.

Happy New Year and Happy Jazz Playing to you!

Jim
