I am looking for reccomendations for an initial mouthpiece for an Eb. I have
tried some pro models but want more time on the instrument before I go that
way. I will most likely order 3 or 4 and select from them. I want a
mouthpiece that responds well when playing in the altissimo register. Because
the Eb already has a bright sound I would like a mouthpiece that will tame
some of that brightness. My wife has a problem with high notes (even on
recordings by good players) so I need to darken the instrument's sound if I
want to practise at home.
I also would like advice on tuning. This horn plays the notes fingered with
the right hand fairly close to being in tune. But left hand notes are very
flat!! Typically 40 cents. I am having some shorter barrels made but that
means I will probably have to slide the lower joint out quite far. I tried a
new Buffet R13 Eb and it played the same way but not with as much difference
as mine. Is it the nature of the beast? Or am I defective? Even my poor ear
cringes when playing this horn.
