In my case, if I'm sitting and clapping, it means (and I thought it
always meant) "good or average" performance. If I'm not clapping, or
half the hall left early, it normally means bad performance or music
that isn't interesting to that particular audience.

No two performances are ever alike, as no two audiences are never alike.
I played jazz bass in a band for a number of years when I was younger,
and we experienced the same thing on a daily basis. Some days were good
days, some days were bad. When I played country-western - they threw
things at you if they didn't like what you played. Those scenes from the
"Blue Brothers" movie aren't far from the truth ...

Talk about audience feedback!
