I think he means that the Bb clarinet sounds brighter than the A clarinet
in general - saying that he prefers darkening the Bb and brightening the
A. I think this would lead to the two sounding more alike in "color".
Disclaimer: This is a totally unscientific and presumptive statement on
my part and is just an opinion as to his meaning. <]:o)
