It was an exercise to release the tension after doing the staccato etude
(Langenus p.22 - see http://www.sneezy.org/OCR/articles/spring1.html) and
working up speed until it wouldn't go any faster. After doing some "bugle
calls" as he put it, the tongue worked better (faster and less tense) again.

After trying it, I immediately felt relief and was thrilled about it. I've
tried this out more often, also with pupils and had success with it (i.e.
after the strain of the exercise and then the bugle calls, the tongue works
more efficiently again).

I get a similar effect of relief by doing a round of double-tonguing. When I
go back to single tonguing, it works more efficiently again. In playing
pieces, I like to mix up single and double whenever it gets a bit "fast".
Like that, I stay more relaxed and can pick out the spots where double works
better.

I don't believe this was an exercise for differing tongue positions. It is
certainly necessary to vary the tongue position with different forms of
attack, or with speed, register, etc. but I think this was only for the
efficiency (speed) of the tongue muscle. I must say, since I met Bob in July
in Ostend and have tried this out, my tonguing has also definitely improved
(faster).

I don't know if Bob reads the klarinet list. (I think I've seen something
from him on it once). Maybe there is a correction needed to my statements?
