Hi, everybody! My first post--

Woody Allen is a clarinetist who sort of makes movies as a hobby and to
support his clarinet habit. Some might say this explains the quality of most
of his movies. Ahem. The only times I remember seeing Woody Allen in one of
his movies playing a clarinet was in Zelig--not actually playing, just
standing there holding one--and fixing one up in Sleeper.

Someone speculated that the documentary Wild Man Blues was directed by Woody
Allen--Actually it was directed by documentarian Barbara Kopple. The thing
that was fascinating about it to me was how people who are world famous lead
incredibly banal and uninteresting private lives. Although, if you read
between the lines, there was at least one very riske insight that I will hold
back in deference to this newsgroup's G rating! I am in the movie industry,
so I guess the film was interesting to me because his life is a lot like
mine--I spend most of my time at home, alone, in front of the typwriter and
very little time cavorting around with attractive actresses or doing any of
the things people think people in the movie industry do. Most of the people
in this industry have to work like dogs and very little time for anything even
vaguely resembling a personal life. And, also, most people in the industry
are miserable personally. There's a lot of drug addiction and mental illness.
Comparatively speaking, Woody Allen seems to me to be WELL ADJUSTED! He and
Soon Yi seem to genuinely like each other and he enjoys playing his clarinet.

Don
