Well, here's an example of a passage where 'whispering', in my opinion,
has a more powerful effect in the piece than a 'natural' sound: the
first long solo in Tchaikowsky VI -- the one taken over by the bassoon
or bass clarinet for the last 4 notes.

There's a sort of loneliness and sadness you can get if you make use of
your possibility to restrict resonance *throughout* the system -- as
though you're saying something that you really don't want to say. The
sound can be no less beautiful, but just, well... whispered.

Another possibility is the 'doux et penetrant' solo in the Debussy
Premiere Rhapsodie. The 'small' sound is like a small, distant, intense
light.

Don't think I'm saying that you 'should' do these things. But I think
it's a shame to say that you *shouldn't*.

Not that I'm saying that you're saying that you shouldn't.......:-)
