"Please help me understand how this can work. I do not understand how, with
a given setup and on any specific note, that the amount of air put through
the horn can be altered without the volume of the sound changing
proportionately".

Air speed can be altered by tongue level and shape.
i.e.. ou gives lower air speed focused at the reed then ee.
various vowels work best in different areas
of the horn.

A sound with more harmonic content, and focus, travels
better further without loosing so much, and will be perceived as
louder, even though the air volume may be less. So we can alter
volume without altering tone, or tone without altering volume after
developing control of tongue, embouchure, air.

Love to see more discussion on this from people more
knowledgeable then myself,... use of vowel sounds, for certain
ranges, sounds, tongue position, etc.
I've also been told that a stronger upper lip , and its use pull up the
soft palette higher, increasing air speed as it strikes the reed
, is this true?
